My car is murdering batteries - 06-11-2016, 08:12 AM

I'm on at least my fourth battery since having the alternator rebuilt on my LX. Fortunately, Walmart has replaced them over and over again without much trouble. I have a new battery in it at the moment.

It's the same damage to the battery every time. It charges to a maximum of 66-75 percent.

I put a meter on the battery while it was running, and it says 14. My meter doesn't read DC in decimals, unfortunately. Trying to rectify that today.

I'd like to have a little bit of information before I go back to the shop in Lewisville that rebuilt it. I know it's been a few years since they did it, but this isn't a new problem, and if they're going to try to charge me for making it right then I'd be better off buying a 3G alternator from a scrapyard.

By the way, nothing else has changed. I might have had a battery go bad before the new alternator, but it was outside the lifetime of the battery, and the battery is securely fastened down, so vibration is not an issue.

In a rebuilt unit, basically all they do is put in new diodes and bushings. A re-manufactured unit is completely taken apart and uses the same process as building a new unit, the housing, stator, and armature are shot peened to clean, new windings are wrapped, new bushings and diodes are installed, and tested same as a new unit. When I worked for Ford, I was at one of their re-man plants and was in the alternator group and that's how we did ours. IMHO a re-manufactured unit is just as good as a brand new one, usually for 1/2 the price, with the same and sometimes a better warranty.

As for batteries, if they go bad within the first 6-8 weeks, it's usually a faulty battery, otherwise, it's something that caused the battery to go bad.

Yeah, that's why I suspect the alternator for killing the batteries. I have the same battery in my pickup and the same battery in my van and they've been fine. It's not terribly likely that I've gotten that many bad batteries.

When the guy from Auto Start rebuilt the alternator he beefed it up for me. I don't exactly know what that entails, but he didn't just rebuild it to stock specifications. I wouldn't want another 75 amp alternator in the car.

I'm trying to remember why I rebuilt the alternator in the first place. It didn't die, so maybe I misdiagnosed and had it rebuilt for nothing. I'll check the history here.

Took it to the auto parts store and had them run the machine on it. From the battery to the starter to the alternator, it's all running like a champ. Unless there's something intermittent happening, there's no obvious culprit to be found. Looks like I might end up replacing the battery cables and terminals.

Make sure all of the ground connections are clean and tight. Grease/oil, corrosion, or slightly loose can cause problems that mimic a bad starter, alternator, or battery.

Good idea. Since I can't afford new wires at the moment I can just go in and make sure all the terminations are clean and tight.

Scott,
I your first post, you mentioned reading 14 volts. Was that at idle? Did you happen to check it at 2000-3000 rpm? Am wondering if the voltage regulator is an issue.
Any thought from those who are wiser than me?
Mike

That's an excellent thought, and I hadn't considered it. When I was at O'Reilly, I don't think he ever had me step on the gas when we tested the system. Everything runs like a champ at idle.

The voltage regulator is integrated into the alternator. Since I doubt the guy will take any responsibility for what he rebuilt after this period of time I probably need to be looking for a 3G from a salvage yard.

I'm waiting on a friend who has a meter that reads tenths of a volt, so I'm kind of in a holding pattern until then. I'll post more information as I get it.

Not yet. Haven't heard back from my friend and I don't have the money to throw down on a 3G alternator right now. I have roughly infinity projects to get done right now so it drops down the list for a while.

Update: Someone from the NTMC was nice enough to give me the stock alternator from their Fox. I bought a new pigtail for it and installed it. Everything has been fine for several months.

It is possible that the alternator was killing batteries before I had it rebuilt, but I would really expect the person who rebuilt it to have caught any problems.

Update: Battery acting wonky again but it still charges all the way up. I think I have a wiring issue. Looking at post history, I was supposed to have checked all my connections at some point, but I forgot to do it. Looks like that's my weekend project.
